How do I know my child needs individual tutoring?
Virtually every student can benefit from the personal attention that ABC Tutors can provide. Whether your child is currently struggling with a particular subject, frustrated with the amount of effort required to keep up with homework, or wants to get ahead and excel, ABC Tutors can work with you to achieve those goals.
How does the ABC Tutors program work?
Our approach is simple, we work with you to determine your needs and goals, and then match your child with one of our skilled and experienced instructors.
The program begins by focusing on an overall approach to learning: study skills and academic organization. The goal is always to address immediate needs and to have a lasting impact on performance and confidence.
Our instructors primarily use the curriculum your child is using in the classroom rather than having an entirely separate study program like some center-based programs. We have found that this approach more quickly and directly improves performance and confidence in the classroom, and feels more like help rather than extra work.
Following the school’s curriculum allows the student to keep up with his studies and allows the tutor an opportunity to review anything the child did not understand in the classroom. Using the student’s school curriculum as a guideline, the tutor may introduce supplementary materials and exercises to illuminate difficult concepts.
How often does the Student meet with the Tutor?
Typically, the tutor meets with the student once or twice a week for one to two hours each session. Depending on whether the student has catch-up work, late assignments, motivational concerns, or learning challenges, the recommended frequency may be higher. Ultimately, the frequency is determined by the parents.
What if my child doesn’t like the Tutor?
In our initial consultation, we will try to learn about your child’s personality and learning style. We will use that information to select a tutor we believe will be a good match both in skills and personality. Our tutors make every effort to develop a positive, constructive relationship with the student, but if you do not think the tutor is a good match, ABC Tutors will assign another tutor to work with your child.

Can you provide tutors to families who home school their students?
Yes. ABC Tutors can be the perfect resource for parents who home school their children. Many parents are excellent teachers, but may not have expertise in every subject. ABC Tutors is ready to provide tutors who can fill in the gaps and provide support for home schooling parents. We can also help with curriculum choices and ACT/SAT prep.
Where does the Tutor meet with the Student?
For convenience, families generally prefer that we meet in the student’s home. If you prefer, or if the home is not conducive to getting the most out of the tutoring sessions, we can also arrange for other convenient sites, such as a library, office or community center.
What are the qualifications of your tutors?
Our tutors are credentialed teachers, private-school teachers, former teachers or degreed professionals. ABC Tutors checks all references, conducts background checks and personally interviews every tutor. Our tutors are selected not only for their experience and credentials but also for their dedication to helping children succeed.
Do you require long-term contracts?
No. At ABC Tutors we believe that once a student’s or family’s goals are accomplished our mission is complete. You won’t be bound by a long-term contract to continue with our tutoring service. We’ll be here for you if you need us again! And if you do, we know you’ll call us.
What about Summer tutoring? Fall break? Winter break? Spring break? Does ABC Tutors offer tutoring when school is out of session?
Yes. If your schedule allows, continuing with tutoring during school breaks can be very helpful getting your child caught up with or even ahead of their schoolwork.
During the summer break, having a tutor work with your child on subjects they have had difficulty with can start the next school year on the right foot. Research shows that continued instruction through the summer months can have a dramatic impact on academic performance. As always, in home tutoring can be easily scheduled to accommodate vacation schedules and other summer activities.
What advantages does ABC Tutors offer over center-based educational services?
The main advantages to ABC Tutors include true one-to-one instruction, convenience, flexibility, and the use of your child’s own curriculum.
Convenience – ABC Tutors come to your home or other convenient location without the need to add one more drop-off and pick-up.
Flexibility – ABC Tutors work with the individual schedules of busy families. Tutoring sessions can easily be coordinated with other extra-curricular activities.
Rather than using a canned prescription, ABC Tutors begin with the same curriculum that your child is using at their school, and augment those materials with targeted exercises and activities based on your child’s specific needs.
ABC Tutors does not believe “one size fits all,” and we don’t think having your child do “double work” is usually the best solution. Achieving success with the same curriculum they are using at their school builds confidence and transfers success in tutoring to sustainable success in the classroom.
